SuperMUC, With a peak performance of about 3 Petaflops, LRZÕs flagship computer SuperMUC is currently EuropeÕs second fastest supercomputer and ranks 9th on the current TOP500 world wide list (June 2013). The IBM System X iDataPlex consisting of 155,000 cores, which was officially inaugurated in July 2012, is not only fast but highly energy-efficient thanks to hot-water cooling technology. SuperMUC is designed as general purpose HPC system, which allows an exceptionally versatile deployment. More than 150 different applications run on the LRZ system per year. SuperMUC is being used for a wide spectrum of science and research tasks, ranging from medical and engineering & energy applications to astrophysics.
Read more...SuperMUC will be the successor of the Hšchstleistungsrechner Bayern II (HLRB II). The Leibniz Supercomputing Centre will become a European centre for supercomputing. In order to house the extended hardware, the infrastructure of the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre will be more than doubled. Additional buildings for the hardware and office space are under construction. SuperMUC was named the second fastest supercomputer in Europe and is at position 6 in the TOP500 list at the November 12, 2012 International Supercomputing Conference in Hamburg, Germany. It is also the fastest Intel-compatible system in the world.
